What Is an Aspect?

An aspect is the angular relationship between two planets. Seen from Earth, the distance between two planets along the ecliptic forms an angle, and that angle determines how their energies interact.

Not every angle is meaningful — astrology focuses mainly on five ‘major aspects’: conjunction (0°), sextile (60°), square (90°), trine (120°), and opposition (180°).

The Five Major Aspects

• Conjunction (0°): the two planets’ energies fuse, like two people standing shoulder to shoulder. It can be a powerful alliance or mutual interference, depending on the natures of the planets involved.
• Sextile (60°): a gentle opportunity that needs to be actively seized, like two complementary friends who need some effort to work together.
• Square (90°): inner tension, like two people pulling in perpendicular directions. It brings challenge and friction, but also fuels growth and motivation.
• Trine (120°): natural harmony and ease, like moving with the current. It points to natural talent, but because it comes so easily, it can be taken for granted.
• Opposition (180°): a tug between two poles, like a seesaw. It asks you to find balance between two energies and is often a core life lesson.

Harmonious and Challenging Aspects

Trines and sextiles are called ‘soft aspects’ (harmonious aspects); they bring talent and ease. Squares and oppositions are called ’hard aspects’ (challenging aspects); they bring challenge and friction.

But hard aspects are not bad — many highly accomplished people have strong squares and oppositions, because it is precisely that tension that drives them to break through and grow. Conversely, people with too many harmonious aspects may be talented yet lack motivation.

Classic Aspect Patterns

A ‘Grand Trine’ is formed when three planets trine one another, creating an equilateral triangle. It is generally regarded as an excellent configuration, in which the energies of three areas of life flow together naturally. But it can also make a person a little too comfortable.

A ‘T-Square’ is formed when three planets create two squares and one opposition, making a T shape. It is a configuration full of challenges, but also one of powerful motivation — the tension concentrates on the planet at the apex, which becomes the core lesson of one’s life.
