An Introduction to Zi Wei Dou Shu

Zi Wei Dou Shu (Purple Star Astrology) is traditionally attributed to Chen Tuan (also known as Master Xi Yi), who is said to have created it near the end of the Five Dynasties. With the Zi Wei star at its head, it places more than a hundred stars across twelve palaces to form a “map of life.” Compared with BaZi, Zi Wei Dou Shu excels at describing the state of specific life domains.

Constructing a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart requires the year, month, day, and hour of birth, with greater precision than BaZi (down to the two-hour time block). At its core is a combined reading of “stars + palaces”: the stars describe the nature of the energy, while the palaces describe the life domain where that energy plays out.

The Twelve Palaces

The Major Stars

Zi Wei Dou Shu works with over a hundred stars, but the most important are the “Fourteen Major Stars”: Zi Wei, Tian Ji, Tai Yang, Wu Qu, Tian Tong, Lian Zhen, Tian Fu, Tai Yin, Tan Lang, Ju Men, Tian Xiang, Tian Liang, Qi Sha, and Po Jun.

Each major star carries its own personality. Zi Wei is the emperor’s star, symbolizing leadership and authority; Tian Ji is the strategist’s star, standing for analysis and planning; Tan Lang is the peach-blossom star, associated with desire and artistic flair.

The Four Transformations

The Four Transformations — Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke, and Hua Ji (Transformation of Prosperity, Authority, Recognition, and Obstruction) — are the most subtle mechanism in Zi Wei Dou Shu. Based on the Heavenly Stem of your birth year, they shift four major stars into four different states.

Hua Lu signifies opportunity and smooth sailing; Hua Quan, control and power; Hua Ke, reputation and helpful mentors; Hua Ji, obstacles and fixation. Whichever palace receives a Transformation indicates that the corresponding area of life is where the shift will show.
